Entrepreneurial Environment

Entrepreneurship is the lifeblood of the American economy. Statistics indicate that approximately 70% of jobs in the US are offered by small businesses. In Pike County, small business is the cornerstone of our economy. The EDA takes small business development seriously, offering resources and assistance to support budding entrepreneurs!

Start up information through the Small Business Development Center

The University of Scranton Small Business Development Center maintains an active presence in Pike County. As an avid partner to the EDA, the SBDC presents seminar programs and one-on-one small business counseling services to Pike County entrepreneurs on a confidential basis. In order to provide basic information to entrepreneurs quickly, the EDA and SBDC have partnered to make a basic packet of information and forms for entrepreneurs available electronically.

Whether you're planning to open a landscaping business or you are a manufacturer, contact us with your email address and type of business you're planning to open and we'll get this information to you quickly.

Opening a home based business? Be sure to check with your municipality. Even if your business qualifies as “no impact” there may be forms and fees required!

SBDC First Step

The basic process of filing the proper paperwork to open a business legitimately has commonalities across most industries. SBDC frequently offers a seminar for area entrepreneurs to learn this information in Milford.

Check our events page to find out about upcoming programs. The First Step program is required prior to one-on-one counseling for start-up businesses.

Most entrepreneurs need to register their proposed business name with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania before beginning operations. This can be done mainly online at www.paopen4business.com.

Looking for assistance with building your business plan? Tools are available online at the SBDC website at www.scrantonsbdc.com.

Looking for information on federal loan guarantees and other federal programs for small businesses? Check out the website of the Small Business Administration at www.sba.gov.

Need licensing information? Contact Us.

Some industries require specific licenses before operating in that field. For information regarding specific industry licensing, please contact the EDA office.

Business mentoring programs through SCORE NEPA

SCORE offers mentoring and advisory services for business. To volunteer or to get assistance for your business, contact www.nepascore.org. Assistance can even be offered via telephone and online.

Wayne/Pike Business Incubator

The first business incubator is coming soon to the Pike & Wayne County area! Plans are currently underway for a facility in the historic Hawley Silk Mill complex near beautiful Lake Wallenpaupack.

For more information, contact the EDA office.

Regional Venture Capital programs

There are numerous venture and angel capital networks. Need help finding and preparing to approach them for funding? Contact the EDA or the SBDC.
